The Dinosaurs of Crystal Palace (South London/ U.K.)



In 1854, in the parkland around where the Crystal Palace had been rebuilt in Penge, South London, Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins sculpted series of life-size concrete dinosaur models, which although now considered wildly inacurate were at the time controversial, these, the first dinosaur sculptures caused outrage by promoting evolution six years before Darwin published the origin of the species.

  1. I went here when I was about 4 or 5, there's a couple of pics of it in the family photo album. Had no idea these were Victorian- I thought they were from the 60s!
